Our Solution
The project started with the assessment and Proof of Concept parts, where we wanted to test migration scenario. This part of migration took most of the time because we tried to use platform services for Azure cost savings. The first option was to use SQL Managed Instance for the databases, but unfortunately the applications weren’t ready for this change. Thus, we chose the option of virtual servers that were built again because Azure Migrate does not
support migration of SQL clusters. Therefore, these servers are built from an Azure image with SQL server 2022 installed by default, from which we created a new always on cluster following the same scenario as on-premise and the application servers were migrated using Azure Migrate.
Since this environment contains production and development environment, we could test the data migration in development environment and prepare a detailed plan for the migration of production environment. The customer required to reduce the migration time as much as possible therefore, we divided the migration into several parts, after considering several options such as creating a hybrid cluster. In the first part, copy of the database was initialized using backup and restore scenario and then the log shipping copy was started periodically. This scenario reduced the migration time to a few hours.
All steps were presented and consulted with customer at regular meetings, and together we agreed on the ideal way. The migration time was planned for two Saturdays at 9AM where we migrated all environments. The rest of Saturday and Sunday was reserved for application testers. The migration was followed by hyper-care support, where we helped the customer with minor problems within 3 weeks.
The migration was successful with minimal interference to the client's business.
