Implementation of Azure Virtual Desktop
Starting Point
Statement of ELI ERIC Representative
"Implementing Azure Virtual Desktop was an important step for us towards a modern and secure way of working in a cloud environment. We appreciate the professional approach of the vendor, the high-quality technical design, and the ability to align the solution with our security and operational requirements.
Although the project involved a number of technical challenges, all key areas were addressed efficiently and transparently. The final solution is stable, user-friendly, and was smoothly handed over into production without impacting the day-to-day operations of the organization.
We are satisfied with the delivery, and we now see Azure Virtual Desktop as an important part of our IT ecosystem and a foundation for further development of cloud services."
Černík Aleš, Head of IT, The Extreme Light Infrastructure ERIC
Our Solution
The solution included, in particular:
- design and configuration of host pools and virtual desktop environments
- Implementation of Windows multi-session desktops for efficient sharing of computing resources
- configuration of auto-scaling to optimize operational costs
- integration with Microsoft Entra ID for identity management and support for Single Sign-On (SSO)
- user profile setup using FSLogix profile containers stored in Azure Files
- design and implementation of a network architecture enabling secure access to both internal systems and internet services
The solution also included the creation of standardized Windows desktop images with the possibility of installing a defined set of applications according to the needs of individual user groups.
Benefits of the solution
The deployed Azure Virtual Desktop solution brings several significant benefits to the ELI infrastructure:
- secure remote access to internal systems and applications from various locations
- centralized management of work environments in a cloud infrastructure
- cost optimization thanks to shared multi-session desktops and auto-scaling
- a high level of security thanks to integration with Entra ID and modern authentication mechanisms
- a flexible platform ready for scaling the number of users and applications
The platform is prepared to support hundreds to thousands of users and can dynamically respond to the current needs of the organization.
After implementation was completed, comprehensive testing was carried out, and the Azure Virtual Desktop environment was successfully handed over to production. The system is now used as a standard platform for remote user access to internal ELI resources and is part of a broader cloud infrastructure built in Microsoft Azure.
About ELI
