Irish Government Priorities and Green Metrics
We attended the 30th anniversary Energy Ireland conference this month in Dublin, counting more than 300 delegates. The event had a special meaning underlined by the presence and address of Ireland’s Minister for Climate, Energy and the Environment, Darragh O’Brien, who set out the government’s priorities: society-wide electrification, household energy price reduction, investment in renewable power sources, and energy resilience.
Indeed, Ireland and Northern Ireland continue to prove themselves as renewables leaders in Europe, successfully progressing towards ambitious targets. Renewable energy supply reached 26 TWh in 2025, with wind accounting for 46% of the mix. Over the past 20 years, installed wind capacity has grown from 651 MW to over 5,000 MW —a 681% increase. The share of electricity from renewables (RES-E) has risen from 9% to 41%. Ireland’s first carbon budget (2021–2025) has been met, although the second budget period to 2030 will be significantly more demanding, targeting a 51% emissions reduction.
Billion-Euro Investments in Infrastructure
Energy Security as a New Priority
The geopolitical dimension featured prominently, with speakers describing the current era as one of “geoeconomics” — non-cooperative competition where clean technology has become a strategic sector. For smaller open economies like Ireland, energy security and strategic industrial positioning are more critical than ever. On the investment side, major players highlighted the scale of capital flowing into renewables, including anaerobic digestion and biomethane projects in Ireland.
The conference was an excellent opportunity for networking with representatives of TSOs, DSOs, regulators, investors, and technology vendors taking part in the Irish energy market transformation. We made several valuable new contacts and are looking forward to following up on the opportunities and partnership discussed.
Unicorn has been working closely with EirGrid and SONI since 2010, delivering and supporting key market and grid systems based on the Damas MMS:E product. These systems play a critical role in the daily operation of the electricity market across Ireland and Northern Ireland. This long-term collaboration is further strengthened by a framework agreement extending up to 20 years, positioning Unicorn as a strategic partner in the ongoing transformation of the Irish energy sector.
EirGrid and SONI, the Transmission System Operators in Ireland and Northern Ireland, respectively, are responsible for maintaining the operational and secure electricity grid. However, they must also align with the European Union’s targets, particularly the climate neutrality goal of 2050. To achieve these objectives, EirGrid and SONI implement initiatives that promote the high-level penetration of non-synchronous energy resources, with a significant emphasis on offshore wind generation. Additionally, they enhance interconnection to facilitate the sharing of renewable energy and strengthen the security of supply. Furthermore, they focus on strengthening the grid infrastructure.
