Upgrade of GIS to Connect Edition
Starting Point
Statement of ČD-Telematika
"The GIS upgrade to the Connect Edition was important to ensure the operability of our GIS in the coming years. The GIS solution supplied by HSI is one of the key systems in the area of asset management and infrastructure documentation of ČD-T, and therefore, the long-term development of this SW tool is part of our strategy. As usual, Fy HSI did a good job on the upgrade, and the project went according to plan."
Ing. Pavel Bartoň, Manager of the Services and Technical Support Department, ČD-Telematika, a. s.
Our Solution
Reasons that led to the need to upgrade to the current version:
- Non-existent support from the supplier of the basic SW (Bentley).
- The current version is not certified for Windows 10/11.
- The current version is not certified for the Oracle 19 database.
- The development of a new version allows us to analyse previous experiences and make changes even in areas that are not directly related to the heavy GIS client.
- Utilising new features of the basic SW that Bentley has introduced to the market over the course of two generations of their GIS technology portfolio.
- Functional revision of the GIS Client application (removal of unused functions, change of configuration, and Database-Core-Client interface).
The main objectives of the project included:
- development of a target concept for upgrading the GIS solution and identification of all modifications necessary for the SW upgrade;
- installation and configuration of development, testing, and production environments and integration with other ČD-T systems;
- custom GIS solution upgrades (including GIS Client, Bentley technology, Oracle 19, and other system configurations).
Project phases
- The project was divided into several phases (stages):
- Creation of the target concept – specification and solution design, schedule
- Development and implementation – the core part, converting applications to new technology
- System testing (FAT/UAT) – internal and external verification of the system in a test environment
- System commissioning and system support
The overall implementation of the GIS Client upgrade solution took half a year.
The HSI/Unicorn team (PM, analyst, developers, tester) and the ČD-T team (PM, analyst, database specialist) participated in the GIS upgrade project.
- The GIS Client upgrade had impacts in several basic areas:
- The core of the GIS Client system – primarily the startup functions that need to communicate correctly with the database
- Server solutions – Database components and GIS services need to respond to new technology
- GIS Client Upgrade – Most functions (applications) in the GIS Client need to be upgraded to new versions compatible with the Bentley CE interface
Technologies applied and the uniqueness of the entire solution
From a development perspective, the focus of the solution is on the MDL language, followed by C++, with the .NET Framework being used to a lesser extent.
- GIS system areas:
- Oracle 19c database (with sdo_geometry support)
- Bentley Connect Edition (basic SW) as a third-party product
- GIS core (based on Bentley components)
- GIS client (user extension)
The system was continuously tested by representatives of the supplier and customer during development, in several stages (iterations):
- Stage I. – Functional prototype
- System login, project creation, menu, display manager
- Stage II. – Core application
- Loading data into the project, viewing (yellow) mode, editing (green) mode
- Creating an activity, menus, and icons for editing data (drawing), saving data to the DB
- Stage III. – Additional applications
- Other menus and icons (construction tasks, checks, printouts, ...)
