REFERENCE – PRAGUE AIRPORT

LetGIS System

The goal of the project was the implementation of a new GIS system based on the Esri platform. The new "LetGIS" solution replaces the original GIS system based on the Autodesk platform. The project started in April 2021 and was completed in three stages and handed over to production operation in mid-December 2022. An integral and important part of the project was data migration from the original system to the new solution. When solving the project, great emphasis was placed on performance – the requirements in this area were very demanding, but we succeeded in deploying the LetGIS Lite client, which met expectations. The LetGIS solution is integrated with many other systems. The integration is two-way, both to internal airport systems and to external applications. LetGIS thus consumes data from the security system, acquires and provides data to SAP, or forwards data to, e. g., Air Traffic Control of the Czech Republic.

Starting Point

Due to the end of support and further development of the existing LetGIS platform, Prague Airport, a. s. decided to switch to a new geographic information system (GIS) based on Esri's ArcGIS Pro platform.

This in-house system, called LetGIS, supports almost all of the company’s processes, especially in property and airport infrastructure management, security systems, planning, and investment support. Further development and connection with other systems at the airport are planned for the future.

Statement of Prague Airport, a. s.

"I think we have gone in the right direction, and LetGIS built on Esri products opens up new ways and possibilities for us to provide our employees with the conditions for effective management of the Prague/Ruzyně airport area and the right decision-making that leads the company to growth."

Our Solution

The project was divided into several stages, which were implemented by Unicorn Systems HSI in close cooperation with the customer's team:

  • In the first phase, part of the database was transferred to the new system, and basic applications were prepared and configured for its management and use by regular users. The ArcGIS Pro heavy client provides an environment for creating, managing, and updating spatial and non-spatial data and publishing them for use in a light client on the ArcGIS Experience Builder technology platform. It is the client application LetGIS lite, accessible to a wide range of Prague Airport employees, that allows you to search and locate on the map not only individual terminals, but also other objects and services, offices and other spaces, and even individual employees at their assigned workplaces, with the display of the situation of a relevant floor. In addition to a clear display, the searched objects are supplemented with descriptive information, image previews, and hyperlinks. It is also possible to quickly and easily locate preset objects or create your own user bookmarks for quick navigation. In LetGIS Lite, employees can request the assignment of a workplace in a selected room. This application fully replaces the previous light client of the same name.
  • There is also a simplified version of the LetGIS mobile application, which users of mobile devices such as tablets and mobile phones will appreciate, thanks to the responsive behaviour of the application.
  • In subsequent stages, light client applications for making the technical and security infrastructure available, 3D web applications, and mobile applications for data collection in the field are being prepared. Background maps and geographic data for external applications used at Prague Airport will also be made available. Last but not least, integration tasks with internal information systems such as SAP, BIP, MIB, PMS, CAFM, and others are implemented.

Key characteristics of the implemented solution:

  • Business processes
    • management of topography and altimetry data of the airport and its surroundings
    • collection, management, and publication of special aeronautical data and information
    • technical records in several monitored areas (real estate, leases, technical and transport infrastructure, environment, protection zones, safety, road management)
    • search, geospatial analysis, publication of data, maps, and map applications
    • data collection by mobile means in the field
  • Users
    • potentially each of the 2,500 employees of the Prague Airport
    • Administrators of operational agendas that are solved in LetGIS (approx. 80)
    • users of integrated internal systems (CAFM, SAP, PMS, BIP, CCTV)
    • users of external systems consuming services or data (Fire Rescue Service of the Czech Republic, Police of the Czech Republic, Air Traffic Control)
    • GIS specialists (approx. 7)
  • Functionality (Business Use Cases)
    • viewing data in non-editing clients, editing and managing basic and agenda data in editing clients
    • integration services, data imports and exports from/to internal systems (CAFM, SAP, PMS, BIP, CCTV)
    • providing aeronautical data in the AIXM interchange format
    • visualisation and symbolization of data, publication and management of map services and web maps, analysis of obstacles and limiting areas, and planned buildings
    • data imports from public registers (SPI KN, RÚIAN)
  • Deployed technologies
    • ArcGIS Enterprise 10.8.1 - ArcGIS Server + Portal for ArcGIS
    • Esri Geodatabase 10.8.1 on DB Oracle 19c
    • ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Experience Builder, ArcGIS Field Maps
    • Data Interoperability extension and 3D Analyst ArcGIS Aviation Airports/Charting
