We Have Digitized the Creation of Production Specifications at HARTMANN-RICO

Unicorn, a leading European supplier of information systems and solutions in the field of information and communication technologies, has developed software that provides European surgeons with exactly the tools they need for a given procedure during operations. At the HARTMANN-RICO production plant in Veverská Bítýška, this software is used to produce more than 3.6 million sets (sets of instruments and medical supplies) for surgical procedures each year. For HARTMANN-RICO, the digitisation of production specification preparation is the first step towards the gradual automation of the entire production of surgical sets.

Customized 3D Configurator

Each surgical set is specific not only in terms of its contents but also in terms of how the individual components are arranged within it. Not only is the sequence of individual steps during the operation itself taken into account, and the corresponding order in which medical instruments and other medical supplies are stored—but also, for example, the fact that the set can be unpacked as easily as possible in the operating room."Each type of operation requires a slightly different set of instruments. At the same time, each hospital has its own requirements for what an operating set should contain. Different hospitals use different components for the same type of procedure. HARTMANN-RICO supplies disposable operating sets to hundreds of hospitals in Europe. Similarly, there are dozens of different types of surgical procedures. Under no circumstances should a specific surgeon find that something is missing from the surgical set for their operation, or, conversely, that there is something superfluous in it," explains Miroslav Hlaváč, account manager at Unicorn.

The company has long emphasized innovation and digitization. That is why, in cooperation with Unicorn, it has digitized the creation of production specifications for surgical sets. Thanks to the new software, the production plant in Veverská Bítýška produces more than 3.6 million surgical sets per year, which precisely meet the needs of individual hospitals and surgical procedures.

Faster Production and Happier Customers

With our 3D Configurator, orders are placed quickly and efficiently. The application features a simple and intuitive interface, making it usable even by non-technical users. Lower user requirements lead to better sales. At the same time, the client can more easily establish partnerships and expand into new locations.

Lower Costs and Fewer Errors

When creating production specifications for surgical sets in Veverská Bítýška, pencils and standard spreadsheet software were mainly used. Unicorn's task was to develop software to support the creation of production specifications for the manufacture of surgical sets.

During the development of the application, it was necessary to work with a product database containing tens of thousands of items. The average surgical set contains about 15 items – the smallest ones only four and the largest ones more than 90 components. At a certain stage, the components are converted from words into images and assigned a color that identifies the operator who will insert them into the set. For this reason, the user interface includes a drag-and-drop feature. Reliability, user-friendliness, and high intuitiveness are the cornerstones of the solution.

"We have never been a classic mass production company and offer customer-oriented solutions. The trend is that the number of pieces in each production order is decreasing, while the number of components used and the variability of operating sets are increasing. This means a significant increase in the need to process ever-changing production specifications. Digitizing this process is a significant time and financial benefit for us. Unicorn understood our needs and created a system that will be the basis for the gradual digitization and automation of a large part of our production."
