Changes to Automation and AI Billing in Atlassian Tools: What the Current Notifications Mean and How to Prepare

On September 1, 2026, Atlassian announced a major update to its automation and AI credit usage model, which will take full effect on December 3, 2026. Instance administrators now have access to a detailed overview of their monthly usage and allocated limits (allowance). As a result, some of you have started receiving automatic email notifications about reaching 80% or 100% of your limit. We would like to reassure you and explain what these messages mean and how to make the most of the transition period.

Why Are You Getting Notifications, and Should You Worry About Unexpected Charges?

If you have noticed an alert in the admin console or in your email saying that you have used 80% or 100% of your automation limit and that further rules will be “billable”, there is no need to worry – you are not facing any additional costs at this time.

A testing and transition period is currently underway and will last until December 3, 2026. These notifications are intended solely as an informative indicator of your organization’s actual usage. Atlassian uses them to show you how your current setup would look in live operation, without charging you anything for exceeding the limits until December.

Atlassian automation limit notifications, informational only until Dec 3, 2026.

What Will the New Model Bring from December 3, 2026?

From December 2026, Atlassian is moving to a system in which each instance has a set monthly volume of automation runs and AI credits included in the price of its license tier:

  • Real-time usage tracking: Administrators can transparently monitor current limit usage for the given month in the admin console.
  • Options when exceeding the limit: If your needs exceed the included volume, you will be able to choose from several options – purchasing an add-on capacity pack, a flexible pay-as-you-go model, or upgrading to a higher license tier with a higher base limit.
  • Focus on efficiency: The aim of the new model is to encourage sustainable and optimized configuration of automation rules.

How to Use the Transition Period to Your Advantage

The time until December 3, 2026 is the ideal opportunity to review and optimize your environment:

  1. Audit your existing rules: In practice, many automations run unnecessarily often (for example, they trigger on every minor issue change when specific filtering would be enough) or are duplicated.
  2. Process optimization: By correctly reconfiguring conditions (smart values, JQL filters), you can significantly reduce automation run consumption without affecting functionality.
  3. Capacity and license planning: You will gain real data on which model is the most cost-effective for your company in the long term.
